Yogyakarta, July 7, 2026 – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) officially inaugurated Prof. Dr. apt. Rumiyati, M.Si. as Professor of Food Macromolecular Pharmaceutical Engineering at the Faculty of Pharmacy during an inauguration ceremony held on Tuesday (7/7) at the UGM Senate Hall. The appointment marks a significant milestone in Prof. Rumiyati’s distinguished academic career.
In her inaugural address, titled “Utilization of Macromolecules and Bioactive Compounds from Biological Resources for the Development of Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Products,” Prof. Rumiyati highlighted the immense potential of macromolecules and bioactive compounds derived from biological resources as innovative raw materials for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical development. She emphasized that Indonesia’s rich biodiversity represents a strategic asset that should be continuously explored through research aimed at improving public health while strengthening the independence and competitiveness of the national pharmaceutical industry.
During her presentation, Prof. Rumiyati explained that various natural macromolecules, including proteins and polysaccharides, as well as bioactive compounds obtained from plants and other biological resources, possess promising characteristics for application as active pharmaceutical ingredients and drug delivery systems. Through pharmaceutical engineering approaches, these compounds can be modified to enhance their stability, bioavailability, and therapeutic efficacy, ultimately leading to the development of higher-quality pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products.
Prof. Rumiyati’s inauguration adds to the growing number of distinguished scholars at the UGM Faculty of Pharmacy with expertise in strategic fields of pharmaceutical sciences. Her appointment is expected to further strengthen the implementation of the university’s Tri Dharma, education, research, and community service, while expanding national and international collaborations in the development of health products derived from biological resources.
This achievement also reflects the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through the development of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products that promote public health, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through research and innovation based on biological resources, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the sustainable utilization of natural resources to create value-added health products.
