Yogyakarta, September 5, 2026 – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held a Cosmetic Clinical Trial Workshop under the theme “Towards the Development of High-Quality and Trusted Indonesian Cosmetics” from Thursday to Saturday, September 3–5, 2026. Held at the Auditorium, 8th Floor, APSLC Building, Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, the three-day workshop was attended by 60 participants, fully meeting the available capacity.
The workshop was designed as a learning and capacity-building forum to strengthen participants’ understanding of various aspects of cosmetic clinical trials, including regulations, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles, cosmetic ingredient safety assessment, clinical trial protocol development, clinical trial methods, subject calculation and recruitment, informed consent, and clinical trial documentation. The workshop also provided participants with opportunities to engage directly in discussions with academics, practitioners, regulators, and experts with experience in the implementation and oversight of clinical trials.
The first day began with an opening session featuring a video presentation, the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, Indonesia Raya, and a welcoming address by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, Prof. Dr. apt. Satibi, S.Si., M.Si. Following the opening, participants took a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) pre-test as part of the learning process. The academic sessions began with presentations on Clinical Trial Regulations in Indonesia and Good Clinical Trial Practice Principles, delivered by Drs. apt. Hary Wahyu Triestanto Wibowo, an InaREC Expert and Clinical Trial Consultant.
The discussion continued with a session on Cosmetic Ingredient Safety Assessment, delivered by Prof. Dr. apt. Arief Nurrochmad, M.Si., M.Sc., from the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy UGM. Participants then received presentations on Guidelines for Cosmetic Clinical Trials and Claim Support for Cosmetics from Dra. apt. Mayagustina Andarini, M.Sc., Senior Expert Food and Drug Inspector at the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM). The first day concluded with a session on Introduction to Health Research Ethics Committees and Ethical Considerations in Cosmetic Clinical Trials, delivered by Prof. dr. Tri Wibawa, Ph.D., Sp.MK(K), Chair of the Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing UGM and Dr. Sardjito General Hospital.
On the second day, participants deepened their understanding of the technical aspects of cosmetic clinical trials through a session on Cosmetic Clinical Trial Methods, delivered by dr. Flandiana Yogianti, Ph.D., Sp.D.V.E., Subsp.D.K.E., from the Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing UGM. This was followed by a session on Clinical Trial Protocol Development, presented by Prof. Dr. apt. Zullies Ikawati, from the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy UGM.
The learning sessions continued with Subject Calculation, Clinical Trial Subject Recruitment, and Informed Consent, delivered by Prof. Dr. dr. Rizaldy Taslim Pinzon, Sp.N., M.Kes., from the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, and Bethesda Hospital Yogyakarta. Participants also gained insights into Clinical Trial Document Preparation through sessions delivered by Dra. apt. Mayagustina Andarini, M.Sc., and Drs. apt. Hary Wahyu Triestanto Wibowo. The second day also provided an opportunity for participants to share experiences and discuss various challenges encountered in conducting cosmetic clinical trials.
The third day focused on practical activities. Participants were divided into groups to develop clinical trial protocols under the guidance of facilitators, namely Dra. apt. Mayagustina Andarini, M.Sc., Drs. apt. Hary Wahyu Triestanto Wibowo, Prof. Dr. apt. Zullies Ikawati, and Prof. Dr. apt. Arief Nurrochmad, M.Si., M.Sc. This group activity allowed participants to apply the knowledge and concepts acquired during the previous two days to the development of clinical trial protocols.
In addition to protocol development, participants visited the Cosmetic Laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM to gain first-hand insights into the facilities and laboratory activities supporting the development and testing of cosmetic products. The visit began with an introduction to the Cosmetic Laboratory facilities, including those located on the fifth floor and at Unit II. The workshop continued with the GCP post-test, participant reflections, and the closing session.
The closing ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Raden Rara Endang Lukitaningsih, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources of the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM. The closing session served as an opportunity to reflect on the three-day learning experience while reaffirming the importance of collaboration among higher education institutions, regulators, industry, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders in supporting the development of safe, high-quality, and scientifically accountable cosmetic products in Indonesia.
The Cosmetic Clinical Trial Workshop also contributed to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth through strengthening the competencies and professionalism of human resources involved in cosmetic product development and testing. The workshop also supported SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by strengthening research, testing, and innovation capacities that serve as foundations for the development of a science-based cosmetic industry. Furthermore, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production was reflected in efforts to strengthen understanding of product safety, quality, and evidence-based claims before products reach consumers. Collaboration among academics, regulators, practitioners, and industry stakeholders also contributed to SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by fostering a collaborative ecosystem to advance Indonesia’s cosmetic industry.
Through the successful implementation of this workshop, the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM continues to strengthen its role in providing platforms for learning and collaboration that contribute to the advancement of the national cosmetic industry. By developing a stronger understanding of regulations, methodologies, ethics, safety, and clinical trial protocol development, participants are expected to contribute to the development of Indonesian cosmetic products that are not only innovative, but also safe, high-quality, and trusted.
