Securing 1st Place at NaCF UNY 2026, Pharmacy UGM Students Innovate Eco-Friendly Cosmetics from Goldfish Scale Waste

Yogyakarta, 25 May 2026 — A student team from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has secured a brilliant victory by winning 1st Place in the Higher Education Scientific Writing Competition at the National Chemistry Fair (NaCF) UNY 2026. This prestigious annual event, organized by the Chemistry Student Association of FMIPA, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, adopted the theme “Chemistry for Sustainable Beauty: Eco-Friendly Innovations in Safe and Modern Cosmetic Formulations”.

The Pharmacy UGM team, named the CYROLLA Team, was led by Vania Christella Wibowo Putri, alongside members Agatha Sherly Ivana Dewi and Yemima Angelina Raharjo, under the academic supervision of Dr. apt. Adhyatmika, M.Biotech. They presented an environmental solution through their scientific work titled “CYROLLA”, an innovative moisturizer product that utilizes goldfish (Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus) scale waste.

This innovation was driven by the concern that the edible portion of goldfish is only about 40–50%, leaving the rest to end up as waste that risks polluting aquatic environments. Applying a circular bioeconomy concept, the CYROLLA team extracted hydrolyzed collagen (HC) from the fish scales using the freeze-dry method to produce more stable HC characteristics with higher yields compared to conventional methods. The formulation was further optimized through nanotechnology integration, utilizing solid lipid nanoparticle heptapeptide (SLN-H7) to enhance the efficacy of HC as an anti-aging agent.

This success underscores the commitment of UGM undergraduate pharmacy students to advancing sustainable beauty practices in Indonesia. Through the method validation and formula optimization of CYROLLA, this project is envisioned as an initial milestone for manufacturing local cosmetic raw materials ready for both national and international markets.

Furthermore, this scientific project directly aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through the provision of affordable and safe skincare, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by supporting national cosmetic raw material independence, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the implementation of green chemistry, as well as SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by mitigating organic waste pollution in Indonesian waters.
