UGM Student Wins Grand Award at Indonesia Research and Innovation Fair 2025

Yogyakarta, January 1, 2026 — Proud news once again comes from the Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Gadjah Mada. Fahmi Ihsanuddin Jauhari, a student of the Pharmacist Professional Program at the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, successfully won the Grand Award in the Life and Natural Sciences Cluster at the Indonesia Research and Innovation Fair IRIFair 2025 organized by the National Research and Innovation Agency BRIN.

This prestigious national competition brought together hundreds of young researchers from various universities and research institutions across Indonesia. Participants represented research innovations in the fields of life and natural sciences, technology and engineering, earth and marine sciences, and social sciences.

Notably, despite being a recent graduate with a bachelor degree in pharmacy, Fahmi was able to compete with participants who were mostly master degree and doctoral degree students. However, this did not discourage him from demonstrating the quality of his research.

Among many submissions, Fahmi research was selected as the best in the Life and Natural Sciences category, focusing on marine pharmacy, microbiology, and applied biotechnology. Through this research, he successfully brought home a trophy, certificate, and the Grand Award from BRIN, sponsored by Bank Rakyat Indonesia BRI.

IRIFair is not only a competition but also a space for collaboration. I am grateful to learn, share, and meet fellow young researchers from various fields. I hope this achievement can contribute meaningfully, especially in addressing challenges in health and sustainability, he stated.

This achievement would not have been possible without the guidance of his supervisors, apt. Setyowati Triastuti Utami, Ph.D. UGM, Gusnaniar, M.Biotech., Ph.D. BRIN, and Dr. Erwin Lamping from University of Otago, New Zealand. Support from collaborators such as Akhirta Atikana, M.Sc. BRIN, Dr. Cintya Nurul Apsari UGM, and the entire team also played a significant role in the success of this research. In addition, Fahmi expressed his appreciation to Dr. apt. Purwanto, Head of the Undergraduate Pharmacy Study Program at UGM, for his full support throughout his academic journey.

This achievement serves as clear evidence that cross institutional collaboration and the spirit of Indonesian young generation can produce work recognized at the national level. Moving forward, Fahmi hopes that this research can be further developed to provide tangible benefits for society.

In closing, this achievement contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs, particularly SDG 3 Good Health and Well being through health innovation, SDG 9 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure through research based development, and SDG 14 Life Below Water through the exploration of marine resources. This accomplishment also highlights the strategic role of the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM in advancing impactful and sustainable research for society.
