Coordination and Consolidation Meeting for International Community Engagement Program 2026: Strengthening Scientific Literacy on Honey in Gunungkidul

Gunung Kidul, March 31, 2026 – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), conducted a coordination and consolidation meeting for the 2026 Community Engagement Program under the Community Development Based on Applied Research and Community Empowerment with International Collaborators scheme on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. This activity serves as a preparatory step for the main program, which will be held on April 30, 2026, entitled “Strengthening Scientific Literacy and Community Capacity in the Characterization of Honey Quality, Authenticity, and Biological Activities as a Health Agent.”

The consolidation activity was carried out in collaboration with the Sari Alami Honey Beekeeping Group located in Kedungpoh Village, Nglipar, Gunungkidul. The meeting aimed to align program plans, identify community needs, and strengthen collaboration between the academic team and local partners to ensure the successful implementation of the program.

The program team members who attended the activity included Prof. Dr. rer. nat. apt. Nanang Fakhrudin, M.Si., Drs. Hari Purwanto, M.P., Ph.D., Dr. apt. Niken Nur Widyakusuma, M.Sc., apt. Eka Noviana, Ph.D., and Dr. rer. nat. apt. Raisatun Nisa Sugiyanto, M.Sc. During the discussion sessions, various technical and substantive aspects of the program were comprehensively addressed, including the design of scientific literacy education on honey, methods for assessing honey quality and authenticity, and the potential development of honey as an evidence-based health agent.

In addition to the discussion sessions, the consolidation activity also included a field visit to the beekeeping site at Sari Alami Honey Farm Kedungpoh. This visit provided direct insights into honey production processes, beekeeping practices, and the challenges faced by local farmers in maintaining product quality and authenticity. These observations serve as an essential foundation for designing context-based interventions tailored to the needs of the local community.

Through this consolidation activity, it is expected that strong synergy will be established between the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, international collaborators, and the local community to enhance scientific literacy and community capacity. This program is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting honey as an evidence-based health agent, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through strengthening community scientific literacy, and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by supporting local economic empowerment through beekeeping activities. Ultimately, the program is expected to generate sustainable impacts on public health, knowledge capacity, and community economic resilience in Gunungkidul.
