UGM Faculty of Pharmacy Team Trains PKK Women in Purwosari to Make Fresh and Instant Jamu

Kulon Progo, October 17, 2026 — Tegalsari and Sabrang Kidul hamlets in Purwosari Village, Kulon Progo, known as an Eco-Edu Tourism Village, once again hosted a community engagement program. On Saturday (17/10), 24 members of the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) groups from the two hamlets joined a jamu-making workshop organized by the UGM Faculty of Pharmacy Community Engagement Team. This year’s program had an international dimension, involving PhD students from Uganda, East Africa.

Hands-on Training in Making Fresh and Instant Jamu

Dr. Djoko Santosa, S.Si., M.Si., led the jamu-making workshop for the participants. Two products were prepared during the training. The first was the fresh jamu Semelak Pace, made from noni, turmeric, and tamarind. The second was an instant temulawak jamu made from temulawak, turmeric, and sappan wood.

Rather than simply attending a lecture, the PKK participants actively took part in each step of the preparation process. The training was designed to introduce practical skills that could support home-based businesses using locally available medicinal plants, while also increasing community awareness of the potential health benefits of natural ingredients.

Empowering an Eco-Edu Tourism Village

Tegalsari and Sabrang Kidul are known as an Eco-Edu Tourism Village, where local residents actively work to preserve the area’s natural environment. The village is home to diverse biological resources, including orchids, medicinal plants, and food crops such as taro, arrowroot, and kimpul. The area also produces bananas, cocoa, and coffee, while its diverse bird and insect populations contribute to the ecological balance of the village.

This community empowerment program is a collaboration between the UGM Faculty of Pharmacy, the UGM Directorate of Community Engagement (DPKM), and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Throughout 2025–2026, the team has regularly accompanied and supported local residents in the area, with the community engagement program set to continue.

From late December 2026 to early February 2027, the area will also host the UGM Community Empowerment Program (KKN-PPM) Period 4. The program will involve a collaborator from Japan whose work focuses on ethnomedicine. The initiative is expected to further strengthen the series of community engagement and international KKN activities in the village.

Supporting the Sustainable Development Goals

The program contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Opportunities to develop home-based jamu businesses support SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth by creating opportunities for additional household income and local economic activity. The use of natural ingredients as health beverages contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, while hands-on training and the involvement of international students support SDG 4: Quality Education. The active participation of women from the local PKK groups also contributes to SDG 5: Gender Equality by strengthening women’s skills and participation in community-based economic empowerment.
