Yogyakarta, August 21, 2026 – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), strengthened its international academic and research networks through a visit to Hangzhou Medical College and Jinhua Academy of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University from August 17–21, 2026. The visit featured the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), visits to educational and research facilities, and discussions on potential collaborations in herbal medicine and natural product drug development.
The UGM Faculty of Pharmacy delegation consisted of Prof. Dr.rer.nat. apt. Nanang Fakhrudin, M.Si., and Drh. Retno Murwanti, M.P., Ph.D. Activities at Hangzhou Medical College were accompanied by Prof. Hui Wang, while activities at Jinhua Academy of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University were accompanied by Prof. Qiyang Shou.
One of the main agendas of the visit was the signing of an MoU between the UGM Faculty of Pharmacy and Hangzhou Medical College, represented by Prof. Hui Wang. The agreement provides a foundation for both institutions to develop collaboration in academic and research activities. The delegation also visited the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Museum at Hangzhou Medical College, providing an opportunity to learn more about the history, development, and application of traditional Chinese medicine, which plays an important role in the development of traditional medicine in China.
The visit continued with the signing of an MoU between the UGM Faculty of Pharmacy and Jinhua Academy of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, represented by Prof. Nanang Fakhrudin and Prof. Qiyang Shou. Through this agreement, both institutions seek to expand opportunities for collaboration in education and research, particularly in natural product drugs and herbal medicine. The delegation also visited the laboratories and animal facilities at Jinhua Academy of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University. The visit facilitated an exchange of insights into the facilities and research activities developed by the partner institution while providing opportunities to explore potential research collaborations.
Representatives from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Surabaya, also participated in the series of visits and discussions. The joint meetings broadened the scope of interinstitutional discussions, including opportunities for collaboration in research and the development of Indonesian traditional medicine. One of the ideas discussed was research on Indonesian traditional medicine by drawing on the experiences of Prof. Hui Wang and Prof. Qiyang Shou in developing maggot-based therapy for wound treatment in patients with diabetes mellitus. Their research experience and approaches are expected to provide valuable references for developing scientifically supported traditional medicine innovations based on Indonesia’s natural resources.
Through this visit and the signing of the MoUs, the UGM Faculty of Pharmacy continues to expand its international partnerships as part of its efforts to strengthen education and research in the field of pharmacy, particularly natural product drug development. Collaboration with institutions in China is expected to serve as an initial step toward establishing sustainable joint research and academic exchanges. The activities also contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through natural product drug research and development, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through knowledge and researcher exchange, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strengthened international collaboration in education and research.
