Lecturers and Students of the UGM Pharmacy Profession Invite PKK Women of Gumuk Village to Create Ginger Candy Innovations and Care About Health

Yogyakarta, September 5, 2025 — Starting at 9.00 AM WIB, 15 students from the UGM Professional Pharmacist Program (August 2025 intake) gathered in Kampung Gumuk Village, Bantul, for a community outreach activity titled “Educating on Using Kitchen Spices to make Throat Lozenges and Demonstrating GCU and Blood Pressure Monitors.” The event was guided by Apt. Farida Nur Aziza, S.Farm., MGMP.

During the session, students showcased an innovative ginger candy product, made from everyday kitchen spices, as a practical idea for home-based business or small enterprises. The hands-on ginger candy demonstration was warmly received questions, and expressed enthusiasm for trying it at home. Participants praised the final product for its great taste and simplicity. In addition, UGM Pharmacy students provided free health screenings, including blood glucose, cholesterol, uric acid, and blood pressure checks, they taught self-monitoring techniques, empowering the PKK mothers to take greater charge of their own health.

The event, joined by around 20 PKK mothers, ran smoothly in a friendly atmosphere. Students were welcomed warmly by locals after coordinating with Mrs. Handoko, the PKK representative. To support on going efforts, the students handed over equipment and ingredients for ginger candy production to the PKK group in the future.

Overall, this community service initiative delivered immediate benefits like enhanced knowledge and health screenings, aligning with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and SDG  4 (Quality Education). It also sparked long-term opportunities in health and enterpeneurship, fostering greater independence among Kampung Gumuk’s PKK mothers and building a healthier, more empowered, and productive community.
