Faculty of Pharmacy UGM Explores Microbial Resources through Single-Cell Genomics Analysis

Yogyakarta, August 28, 2026 – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held a Guest Lecture titled “Unlocking Microbial Resources Through Single-Cell Genomics Analysis and Their Biomanufacturing Applications” on Friday (August 28). Held at the Leadership Meeting Room, 7th Floor of the APSLC Building, the event provided a platform for knowledge exchange on the use of single-cell genomics analysis to uncover the potential of microbial resources and their applications in biomanufacturing.

The Guest Lecture was moderated by Setyowati Triastuti Utami, Ph.D., and featured Tenagy, Ph.D. from bitBiome Inc., Japan, as the speaker. Dr. Tenagy was among the early researchers to join bitBiome Inc. and is the second Indonesian to work at the company. During the session, participants gained insights into the technologies and approaches developed by bitBiome Inc. to explore microbial resources through single-cell genomic analysis.

Single-cell genomics analysis has the potential to provide access to microbial diversity that has previously been difficult to study using conventional approaches. This technology can also support the development of microorganisms with specific characteristics for various biomanufacturing applications, including the development of bio-based products and more innovative production processes.

The Guest Lecture also served as part of the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM’s initiative to explore future collaboration opportunities with bitBiome Inc. The company has established collaborations with various partners in the United Kingdom and the United States. Through this Guest Lecture, the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM and bitBiome Inc. are expected to explore potential cooperation in research, technology development, and the strengthening of academic and industry networks.

Through this event, the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM continues to promote scientific advancement and innovation in biotechnology while strengthening collaboration between academia and industry. This initiative aligns with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, through the development of technologies and biological resources with potential applications in healthcare innovation; SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through strengthening research and the application of genomic technologies in biomanufacturing; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through fostering international collaboration between the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM and industry partners.
