Workshop on DNA Engineering in Zebrafish and Nanopore Genome Sequencing Held in Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM)

Pharmacy UGM - Rabu (6/3) Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Gadjah Mada in collaboration with Faculty of Biology, and Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing held a “Workshop on DNA engineering in Zebrafish and Nanopore Genome Sequencing”. The workshop took place at the Integrated Laboratory for Research and Testing (LPPT UGM) on 4-5 March.

The workshop was attended by professionals and researchers from Universiteit Leiden as resource persons, and led by Prof. Erik Danen and Prof. Herman Spaink, together with experts from Life Science Methods B.V. Participants have the opportunity to learn from sources who are experienced in this field, including gaining insight into the latest genome editing tools and techniques.

During the workshop, participants were trained in the use of an automated injection robot, an essential tool for precise injection of DNA constructs. Modern genome editing tools, including CRISPR/Cas13d are also used to provide participants with practical experience in advanced genetic manipulation techniques.

One of the interesting activities in this workshop was the demonstration of third generation sequencing, especially the use of Oxford Nanopore sequencing technology. This allows participants to obtain sequences of not only zebrafish but also local ricefield fish (Rasbora species), thus expanding the scope of genome exploration.

Prof. Spaink and Prof. Danen complement the practical training by providing lectures on the background and theory, as well as providing participants with comprehensive insight into the underlying principles and applications of the technology. Participants therefore not only gain practical skills but also gain an in-depth understanding of the theoretical basis behind the genomic techniques presented.

This workshop received appreciation from students and researchers as workshop participants from three health faculty clusters, showing an increase in interest and importance of genome techniques in biological research. By providing participants with practical skills and theoretical understanding, the workshop aims to promote further progress in genome research and its applications.

The workshop is also in line with SDGs number 4 by ensuring inclusive, equitable quality education, and increasing learning opportunities for students. The partnership that exists between the faculties at UGM together with Universiteit Leiden in the Netherlands is also an embodiment of SDG number 17 through strengthening implementation and revitalizing partnerships on the global stage for sustainable development.
