Winning Five Championship Titles at Once, UGM Pharmacy Students Dominate Clinical Competitions at the National and International Levels

Yogyakarta, August 21, 2026 – The Faculty of Pharmacy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has once again achieved an extraordinary milestone. Maliha Hanun, a pharmacy student from the batch of 2022, achieved this remarkable feat by sweeping five championship titles in various pharmacy competitions from 2024 to 2025. These achievements were earned in several events specifically designed to test clinical pharmacy competencies and patient counseling skills.

Hanun’s successes span the faculty, national, and international levels, with the following achievements:

  • 2nd Place (First Runner-Up) in the 2025 Advanced Level Clinical Skill Event

This international competition was held online on Sunday (June 15, 2025) by the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF), Asia Pacific Regional Office (APRO). Hanun, representing the Student Executive Board of the UGM Student Association (BEM KMFA), successfully competed individually against more than 80 pharmacy students from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, and Australia in handling a simulated case involving drug therapy for pregnant women.

  • 1st Place Winner of the Pharmative 2025 Patient Counseling Competition

  • 2nd Place in the Pharmacious 2025 Patient Counseling Competition

A national competition held at the UGM Faculty of Pharmacy on Saturday (November 1, 2025), in which eight universities participated. Hanun was tested on her ability to identify drug-related problems (DRPs) in a case involving a skin disorder and to simulate interprofessional communication with a doctor.

  • 1st Place Winner of the 2024 Clinical Skills Event (CSE) Pharmpionship

A faculty-level pharmacy competition organized by BEM KMFA UGM that tests clinical decision-making and scientific communication in English through an interactive question-and-answer system (bingo and quick-response rounds).

  • 2nd Place in the 2024 Pharmpionship Patient Counseling Event (PCE)

This event, also organized by BEM KMFA UGM, challenged participants to formulate self-medication recommendations for Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI) through an English-language video simulation.

Maliha Hanun’s string of successes in winning these five competitions serves as proof of her mastery of competencies in the field of clinical pharmacy. Her skills include evidence-based decision-making, systematic clinical problem-solving, and professional communication skills focused on patient safety.

Hanun’s participation and achievements in these various competitions also underscore the active contribution of the academic community at the UGM Faculty of Pharmacy in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Improvements in the quality of health services and education, such as therapeutic safety for pregnant women and community self-medication that directly contribute to the achievement of SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being. Furthermore, the availability of these clinical competitions, ranging from local to global scales, aligns with efforts to fulfill SDG 4 on Quality Education by strengthening the competencies of future pharmacy professionals. The outstanding achievements of this female practitioner also represent the capacity-building of future healthcare professionals, which supports SDG 5 on Gender Equality.
