UGM Pharmacy Students Assist the Elderly Community in Ledok Tukangan in Making Basil Leaf-Based Soap

Pharmacy UGM – On Sunday (March 16), The Wredha Jaya Elderly School in Ledok Tukangan, Tegalpanggung, Yogyakarta, continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing the well-being and creativity of its members. This time, the elderly had the opportunity to practice making herbal bath soap using basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum forma citratum).

In this initiative, students from the Program Studi Profesi Apoteker (PSPA) at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), participated as mentors, providing technical guidance and education on the benefits and safety of using natural ingredients in personal care products. This activity aimed to enhance the skills of the elderly while introducing eco-friendly health product alternatives.

According to the supervising lecturer, Dr. Djoko Santosa, this activity was not merely a skill training session but also a tangible contribution of academics to community welfare. “We hope this initiative brings sustainable benefits to the elderly and the surrounding community while raising awareness of the importance of utilizing natural ingredients,” said Dr. Djoko.

This activity aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality) by involving elderly women in productive activities, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through local community empowerment, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by promoting the use of environmentally friendly natural ingredients.

Through this initiative, UGM Pharmacy students continue to uphold the spirit of community service and environmental sustainability, fostering meaningful collaborations between academia and local communities. (Rita/HumasFA)
