UGM Pharmacy Profession Students Promote Prevention of Degenerative Diseases Through Health Education

Sleman, September 13, 2025 – Cases of degenerative diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease are now increasingly common in society. A practical but unhealthy lifestyle is one of the main causes of the increased risk of these diseases. Public awareness of prevention is still relatively low, especially among the productive age group and housewives who play an important role in maintaining family health.

Housewives play a major role in maintaining family health. From regulating diet, choosing food ingredients, to forming healthy daily habits. However, the lack of information about degenerative diseases often makes prevention efforts less than optimal.

The community service team of the Pharmacist Professional Study Program (PSPA) at Gadjah Mada University, guided by Dr. apt. Indah Purwantiningsih with members Fahmi Ihsanuddin Jauhari, Naufal Ahmad Fauzy, Rekryan Muhammad Syamil Al Baqir, Handerson Ben Aprilian, and Nala Aesy Salma held an outreach and education event on degenerative diseases on Saturday (9/13/2025) at RT 06 Dukuh Kadirojo I, Purwomartani, Kapanewon Kalasan, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The activity was conducted through interactive two-way communication between the presenters and participants, covering the types of diseases, their symptoms, and prevention efforts, followed by a quiz to enhance participants’ understanding.

The participants were very enthusiastic, as evidenced by the lively discussions during the event. This shows that information about degenerative diseases is greatly needed by the community. This activity not only provided benefits and knowledge to the women’s group members, but also strengthened the relationship between the Faculty of Pharmacy, UGM, and the residents of RT 06 Dukuh Kadirojo I.

This community service supports the achievement of SDG number 3 on health and well-being as well as SDG number 4 on quality education. Through an educational approach, the mothers who participated in the social gathering gained additional practical insights on maintaining family health and understanding the steps to prevent degenerative diseases from an early age. Thus, this activity not only focuses on increasing health awareness but also strengthens the learning aspect of the community so that they are able to apply a healthy lifestyle in their daily lives.

With this activity, it is hoped that the community will increasingly understand that health education plays an important role, both in prevention efforts and in managing degenerative diseases that have already been experienced. The material provided not only emphasizes the importance of a healthy lifestyle as a preventive measure but also provides practical information on proper treatment and daily self-care. This education also strengthens the role of mothers as the frontline in maintaining family health, ensuring its impact is felt sustainably across future generations.
