Yogyakarta, July 29, 2025 – As part of its commitment to the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, particularly in the aspect of community service, the Faculty of Pharmacy at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) held a Community Service activity as part of the 2025 Summer Course program titled “GREEN HOPE: Harnessing Green Pharmacy for Climate Resilience and Community Empowerment.” This event was held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 and involved summer course participants consisting of domestic and international students, as well as students of the pharmacy UGM, and high school students in the Yogyakarta area.
This program is designed as a means of community empowerment through an educational approach that is cross-cultural and inclusive, with a primary focus on improving health literacy and environmental awareness. Through the overarching theme of green pharmacy, UGM’s Faculty of Pharmacy strives to encourage active collaboration between students and the community, especially the younger generation, to become agents of change in facing future health and climate challenges.
The Community Service activity was conducted simultaneously at four high schools in Yogyakarta: SMA Islam Al Azhar 9 Yogyakarta, SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta, SMA Negeri 6 Yogyakarta, and SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta. Summer Course participants delivered presentations in English on educational topics such as “Why Traditional Medicine Matters for Teens and the Climate” and “How Traditional Medicine Helps Today’s Youth and Tomorrow’s Planet.” The material was presented interactively and tailored to the high school students’ level of understanding, creating an open discussion space and encouraging active participation from the students.
This activity aligns with the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM’s efforts to support several points of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being through education on safe and sustainable traditional medicine; Goal 4: Quality Education through interactive cross-cultural learning; Goal 13: Climate Action through the promotion of green pharmacy; and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals through international collaboration. By integrating SDG values, the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM demonstrates its commitment as a socially and environmentally responsible institution.
Through this program, the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM not only provides an international experience for the Summer Course participants but also strengthens the role of higher education in addressing community needs through applicable and relevant scientific knowledge. This activity proves that community service can be carried out creatively, collaboratively, and impactfully, benefiting both local communities and the global academic community.
