Yogyakarta, October 23, 2025 – In an effort to strengthen academic insight and research capacity in drug development, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with Pharmacometrics Indonesia (PMXID), organized a webinar titled “Pharmacometrics as a Tool for Precision Dosing and Role in Drug Development Research” on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM (WIB) via Zoom Meeting.
The webinar featured two distinguished speakers: Prof. Dr. Sebastian Wicha from the Department of Chemistry, Institute of Pharmacy, University of Hamburg, and Dr. apt. Sekar Ayu Pawestri from the Laboratory of Physical Pharmacy and Biopharmaceutics, Department of Pharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy UGM. In addition, a special session was presented by apt. Budi Octasari Susanto, Ph.D., introducing Pharmacometrics Indonesia (PMXID) and its role in promoting the growth and application of pharmacometrics within the Indonesian scientific and clinical community.
The event aimed to introduce and deepen understanding of pharmacometrics, an interdisciplinary field that combines pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling to elucidate the relationship between drug dose, exposure, and clinical response. Through this quantitative approach, pharmacometrics enables the analysis of both individual and population variability, forming the foundation for Model-Informed Precision Dosing (MIPD), a therapeutic strategy that personalizes drug regimens according to each patient’s physiological characteristics and clinical conditions to achieve optimal treatment outcomes.
The discussion also highlighted the integration of pharmacometrics in biopharmaceutics research and drug development, including studies on bioavailability, bioequivalence, and in vitro–in vivo correlation (IVIVC). This approach provides deeper insights into factors influencing drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination, while supporting the design of safer and more effective formulations for patients.
The webinar attracted participation from academics, researchers, postgraduate students, pharmaceutical industry professionals, clinicians, and regulatory representatives, serving as a strategic forum for knowledge exchange and collaboration among stakeholders in pharmacy, medicine, and health sciences at both national and international levels.
This initiative also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) through evidence-based improvements in healthcare quality, Quality Education (SDG 4) through international academic collaboration, and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9) through the application of data science and modeling in innovative drug development.
