The Faculty of Pharmacy at UGM Hosts a Guest Lecture on the Latest Biomedical Breakthroughs with Experts from the Institute of Science Tokyo

Yogyakarta, 30 March 2026 — The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), continues to expand its international academic network by hosting a Guest Lecture titled “Frontiers in Biomedical Science & International Graduate Program (IGP) Introduction”. Held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at the 8th Floor Auditorium of the APSLC Building, the event featured two prominent experts from the Institute of Science Tokyo (IST), Japan: Prof. Susumu Kajiwara and Assoc. Prof. Shunichiro Ogura, who presented the latest breakthroughs in life sciences and biomedical technology.

In the first session, Prof. Susumu Kajiwara delivered a lecture on the molecular mechanisms of pathogenic fungal infections. He presented current findings on lipid synthesis in fungal proliferation, the identification of virulence factors, and strategies for discovering novel antifungal drug targets. This presentation provided students with deep insights into the challenges and opportunities of addressing infectious diseases at the molecular level.

The session continued with Assoc. Prof. Shunichiro Ogura, who reviewed the development of new medical biochemistry based on human metabolite analysis. His discussion focused on the applications of biochemistry in the detection and therapy of various diseases, including cancer. In addition to technical research presentations, both speakers introduced the International Graduate Program (IGP), which offers opportunities for Undergraduate to Doctoral students to understand the research and advanced education ecosystem at the Institute of Science Tokyo.

This guest lecture reflects the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM’s commitment to supporting SDG 4 (Quality Education) by providing direct international academic exposure from global experts. This activity is expected to enhance students’ intellectual capacity and broaden their horizons toward future innovations in drug discovery and medical biotechnology.
