Students from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Universitas Gadjah Mada Conduct Community Service, Supporting Maternal and Elderly Health in Bantul

Yogyakarta, February 23, 2025 – Students from the Pharmacist Professional Study Program (PSPA) at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), have conducted a community service event featuring health counseling and check-ups. The event, which took place at RM Parangtritis, Yogyakarta, on Sunday, February 23, 2025, was aimed at members of the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (an association for the wives of civil servants) and retired employees of SMA Negeri 1 Bantul.

The activity, supervised by lecturers from the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, focused on two main pillars: education and early detection. The counseling session covered the crucial topic of “Tips on Choosing Safe Cosmetics and Medicine for Pregnant and Breastfeeding Mothers.” This material aimed to increase participants’ awareness of product ingredients that could potentially harm a fetus and the principles of proper medication use during pregnancy.

In addition to the counseling, participants received free health screenings, including blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and uric acid measurements. This service is a proactive step toward the early detection of non-communicable diseases common in adults and the elderly.

This community service activity directly supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By providing preventive health services and maternal education, the event contributes to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being). The transfer of scientific knowledge from an academic environment to the public is also a tangible form of SDG 4 (Quality Education), which enhances community health literacy. Furthermore, by specifically targeting and empowering women on relevant health issues, the event supports the achievement of SDG 5 (Gender Equality).

“We hope that activities like this will continue to bridge the knowledge from campus with the real needs of the community, especially in improving quality of life and health awareness,” said Adilla Srikandi Putri, one of the students involved.
