Yogyakarta, October 21, 2025 – Prof. Dr. apt. Nanang Munif Yasin, M.Pharm., has been inaugurated as Professor in Pharmacotherapy and Clinical Pharmacy Intervention at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). The inauguration ceremony was held on October 21, 2025, at the UGM Senate Hall, Main Building. During the ceremony, Prof. Nanang delivered his inaugural lecture titled “The Role of Pharmacotherapy and Pharmacist Interventions in Improving Outcomes for Patients with Chronic Diseases.”
In his address, Prof. Nanang Munif highlighted the critical role of pharmacotherapy and clinical pharmacy interventions in addressing the challenges of managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders. He explained that chronic diseases are long-term medical conditions that develop gradually, persist over time, and are difficult to cure completely. These diseases account for around 60% of the global disease burden and are often accompanied by persistent physical symptoms, psychological distress, and low treatment adherence, estimated at only 50% according to the WHO.
Prof. Nanang Munif emphasized that rational pharmacotherapy is a cornerstone in the management of chronic diseases. The appropriate use of medications aims to control disease progression, alleviate symptoms, and prevent complications. However, therapeutic success depends heavily on patient adherence, side-effect monitoring, and continuous education.
He further explained that clinical pharmacy interventions led by pharmacists have a significant impact on improving patients’ clinical outcomes. Pharmacists play a crucial role in Medication Therapy Management (MTM), which has been proven effective in improving adherence and treatment outcomes among diabetes and hypertension patients. Pharmacists also contribute to patient education, enhancing understanding, independence, and compliance with therapy. In addition, lifestyle counseling and the use of digital health technologies such as telemedicine and health monitoring apps can further strengthen treatment effectiveness.
Beyond clinical and digital strategies, Prof. Nanang Munif underscored the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration among pharmacists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to improve disease control and prevent Drug-Related Problems (DRPs). Looking ahead, he advocated for the strengthening of Patient-Centered Care models, which prioritize individual needs and preferences, supported by digital tools and remote monitoring to ensure continuity of care.
Prof. Nanang Munif also highlighted the value of resilience training and cognitive behavioral therapy for patients with chronic diseases as strategies to enhance mental health, manage stress, and encourage active participation in disease management. These approaches aim to build a more holistic, adaptive, and patient-oriented healthcare system.
This inauguration marks the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM’s continued commitment to advancing the pharmacist’s role as a healthcare professional who not only focuses on medication but also on improving patients’ overall quality of life.
The event also reflects Pharmacy UGM’s contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3) through evidence-based healthcare improvement, Quality Education (SDG 4) through the advancement of academic and clinical pharmacy research, and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17) through multidisciplinary collaboration to enhance the management of chronic diseases in Indonesia.
