It’s not the first time for Faculty of Pharmacy UGM to initiate collaboration with external parties. This time, with Department of Quality Control PT Biofarma, Faculty of Pharmacy UGM held “Identifying Protein by Western Blot Technique Workshop” for three days, from 22nd to 25thof August 2017.This activity was attended by Biofarma employees and aimed to give an education about benefitting Western Blot technique to identify protein. Taking place at APS Laboratory, Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, and Food Analysis Laboratory in building unit V Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, the participants were invited to practice using Western Blot instruments after given prior explanation about the usage.
Western Blot also known as immunoblot is a technique used to analyse specific protein of certain samples. This technique makes detecting expected protein from mixed protein in a large scale easier. Besides to find out the protein size, it is also useful to identify and to classify the protein based on its ability to bind specific antibody.
Prior to this workshop, PT Biofarma has been doing protein identification frequently, yet it hardly tried with Western Blot technique. This is because this technique has not been mastered by the human resources; hence Faculty of Pharmacy UGM held the workshop to help PT Biofarma improve the quality of its human resources. Not just to this extent, apparently the collaboration between the parties will keep going. “As to show its legitimacy, PT Biofarma invites Faculty of Pharmacy UGM to initiate other collaborations,” explained the chair of workshop committee, Muhammad Novrizal Abdi Sahid, M.Eng., Apt.
