Yogyakarta, July 14, 2025 – The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FKKMK) UGM, officially opened the International Summer Course 2025 today at 08:00 AM (WIB). The program, titled “GREEN-HOPE,” aims to explore the role of green pharmacy in building climate resilience and community empowerment through sustainability principles.
The opening ceremony was led by the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, Prof. Dr. apt. Satibi, M.Si. Remarks were also delivered by the Director of Partnership and Global Relations of UGM, Prof. Dr. apt. Puji Astuti, M.Sc. who emphasized the importance of international collaboration in addressing global challenges. The event was also attended by the Dean of FKKMK UGM, Prof. dr. Yodi Mahendradhata, M.Sc, Ph.D, FRSPH, and the Summer Course Coordinator, apt. Setyowati Triastuti Utami, M.Sc., Ph.D.
In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, Prof. Dr. Satibi, stated, “The GREEN-HOPE program is a tangible response from the academic world to the climate crisis. We combine local wisdom in the utilization of medicinal plants with modern scientific innovations. The goal is to create globally competitive, standardized herbal products while also contributing to environmental restoration.”
The program is designed as an interdisciplinary platform to explore the potential of medicinal plants as a solution for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Beyond offering natural remedies, green pharmacy practices also contribute to carbon sequestration, biodiversity preservation, and ecosystem restoration.
The Summer Course is not only in line with UGM’s academic mission but also contributes directly to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The GREEN-HOPE program supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by developing safe and standardized herbal health products, SDG 13 (Climate Action) by promoting nature-based solutions for mitigation and adaptation, and SDG 15 (Life on Land) by advocating for sustainable agricultural practices and the preservation of medicinal plant biodiversity.
The Summer Course will run for three weeks, from July 14 to August 1, 2025. Participants will delve into various topics, from utilizing nature-based innovations and using natural ingredients in pharmacy practices to identifying sustainability strategies and empowering communities. The program also includes field trips to locations that exemplify green pharmacy principles in action, providing participants with practical experience to develop community-based projects.
