UGM’s KKN-PPM Program Promotes Early Detection of Noncommunicable Diseases Through the Active GERMAS Program in Sialanguan Village

Sialanguan, July 28, 2026 – The Community Empowerment Field Study Program (KKN-PPM) team from Gadjah Mada University carried out the Healthy Living Community Movement (GERMAS Aktif) program in Sialanguan Village, Pangururan Subdistrict, Samosir Regency. This program was initiated by Veronika Friska Manurung, a student in the UGM Pharmacy Program, as part of an effort to raise public awareness about the importance of maintaining and monitoring health regularly, particularly in detecting risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs).

The GERMAS Aktif program was implemented by facilitating health screenings for the residents of Sialanguan Village, particularly adults and the elderly. The examinations included measurements of blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and uric acid levels. The health screenings were conducted in collaboration with the Sialanguan Village Integrated Health Promotion Post (Posbindu) as an effort to strengthen the community’s role in monitoring public health. This initiative began with coordination efforts involving the village government and Posbindu volunteers to prepare for the health screening, which took place on July 10, 2026, at the Sialanguan Village office in Pangururan Subdistrict.

Through health screening activities, the public can obtain information about their health status and risk factors for NCDs, which is expected to encourage them to take better care of their health, undergo regular checkups, and adopt a healthy lifestyle as part of efforts to prevent NCDs. The public is also made aware that early detection of diseases is crucial before more serious complications arise.

In addition to conducting health screenings, GERMAS Aktif also featured group exercise sessions with the elderly community. These activities aim to encourage people to stay physically active and make physical activity a part of their daily routine. Regular exercise can help maintain physical fitness, support heart and cardiovascular health, and help older adults remain active in their daily lives.

Through the GERMAS Aktif program, it is hoped that the residents of Sialanguan Village will be encouraged to take a more active role in maintaining their health through promotive and preventive measures. This program also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), by raising public awareness of early detection of NCD risk factors, regular health checkups, and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. The GERMAS Aktif program is one way the UGM KKN-PPM Team is contributing to encouraging the residents of Sialanguan Village to be more aware, active, and self-reliant in maintaining their health and improving their quality of life.
