Faculty of Pharmacy UGM Hosts Guest Lecture on Sustainability of Medicinal Plant Use with Professor from UCL

Yogyakarta, 20 January 2026 — The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a guest lecture entitled “The Sustainable Use of Medicinal Plants: Overcoming Challenges for Climate Change and Bioeconomies’ Rising Demands” on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, from 09:00 to 11:00 AM. The event featured Prof. Michael Heinrich, Professor of Ethnopharmacology and Pharmacognosy at University College London, as the speaker, and was conducted in a hybrid format, taking place onsite at Workshop Room, 3rd Floor, Unit IX, Faculty of Pharmacy UGM, and online via Zoom.

In his presentation, Prof. Michael Heinrich discussed the challenges and opportunities surrounding the sustainable use of medicinal plants amid increasing global demand, climate change pressures, and the expansion of bioeconomies. He emphasized the importance of integrating scientific research, traditional knowledge, and sustainability-oriented policies to ensure the conservation of medicinal plant resources while maintaining their economic, social, and health-related value, particularly in biodiversity-rich countries such as Indonesia.

This guest lecture reflects the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being through the development of safe and sustainable medicinal products, SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production by promoting the prudent use of natural resources, and SDG 13 on Climate Action by encouraging bioeconomy practices that are resilient and environmentally conscious.

The session was moderated by Dr. rer. nat. apt. Raisatun Nisa Sugiyanto, M.Sc., and attended by lecturers, researchers, and students from several universities. Through this guest lecture, the Faculty of Pharmacy UGM aims to strengthen global perspectives within its academic community and to foster international collaboration in advancing pharmaceutical sciences with a strong sustainability orientation.
