Promoting Wise Self-Medication: Enhancing Household Understanding of DAGUSIBU

Yogyakarta, September 7, 2025 – Students of the Apothecary Professional Study Program at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held an outreach community program entitled “Swamedikasi Bijak dan Cerdas: Pemahaman DAGUSIBU di Kalangan Rumah Tangga” (Wise and Smart Self-Medication: Understanding DAGUSIBU among Households). The community program was part of the Professional Competency course requirement and helped prepare the students for their future careers as pharmacists. It also represented the Faculty of Pharmacy’s commitment to upholding the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (the Three Pillars of Higher Education) through community health education.

The outreach was held on Sunday, September 7, 2025, in RT 02 of Padukuhan Kadirojo.. This program aimed to increase the understanding of the community, particularly the housewives of the local neighborhood association. The material presented focused on the application of “DAGUSIBU”—an acronym for DApatkan (Obtain), GUnakan (Use), SImpan (Store), and BUang (Dispose) of medicine—to support proper, safe, and rational self-medication. The event was conducted in a relaxed atmosphere with the local women of Padukuhan Kadirojo at 3:30 PM WIB. The activity began with the distribution of pocketbooks, followed by a warm welcome from a faculty representative, Dr. apt. Indah Purwantini, S.Si., M.Si.

The presentation was delivered in a light and interactive manner by the PSPA students. Participants received information on the practical application of purchasing medicine from proper sources, selecting drugs rationally and effectively, storing medication correctly, and the rules for disposing of unused medicine. The presenters summarized this material using the DAGUSIBU principle. The community’s enthusiasm for DAGUSIBU and self-medication was undeniable, as seen by the many participants who were interactive during the question-and-answer session. The event concluded with the awarding of door prizes, consisting of various basic necessities, to those who actively participated in the discussion.

Through this outreach, it is hoped that the PSPA students not only fulfilled an academic requirement but also contributed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Education on self-medication aligns with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by encouraging the community to maintain their health through the proper use of medicine. Furthermore, it contributes to SDG 4 (Quality Education) by improving health literacy. Finally, applying the DAGUSIBU principle supports SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by emphasizing the wise use and disposal of medicine. Thus, this activity represents a tangible contribution from the PSPA students towards building a healthier, smarter, and more responsible society. (Kiki/HumasFA)
